Ask
Readers ask a question. The answer is confined to your pages, with citations.
Ask lets a reader put a question to your documentation and get an answer with citations to the exact pages and sections it came from.
Three rules it keeps
Section titled “Three rules it keeps”The answer is confined to your passages. “I could not find that in this documentation” is a correct answer, and Ask will give it. This is the whole difference between documentation that can be trusted and a chatbot sitting next to it.
Citations come from retrieval, not from the model. The pages a reader is shown are the pages that were actually sent, filtered to the ones the answer cited. A model that invents a seventh source cites nothing, because there is no seventh passage to point at.
Your pages are treated as untrusted data. Anyone who can write documentation can write “ignore your instructions”: an importer, a contractor, a compromised account. Each passage is delimited, numbered, and introduced as material to quote rather than as instructions to follow.
What it will never answer from
Section titled “What it will never answer from”| Never | Why |
|---|---|
| A draft page | No reader of the site is shown it either. |
| A page the reader cannot read | Retrieval is authorised, per reader. |
| Another project | A project’s Ask sees that project’s pages. |
| General knowledge | If your pages do not say it, the answer says so. |
Controls
Section titled “Controls”The project owner decides:
- whether Ask is available at all;
- which pages it may retrieve from;
- the daily allowance.
Ask is off until somebody switches it on.
Ratings
Section titled “Ratings”A reader rates an answer helpful or not. Citation clicks are counted. Both feed the inbox: a question your documentation could not answer is a knowledge gap with a number attached.
What readers are told
Section titled “What readers are told”The Ask box says what happens to a question before it is asked. Questions are kept only where the project has said so, and the panel says which.
Allowance
Section titled “Allowance”Every question is a paid model call against your plan’s daily site allowance. A cap you cannot see until you hit it is a surprise, so the allowance and the remaining count are visible before that. See Limits.
Note
Ask answers from your published pages. If the answer is wrong, the page is wrong. That is the intended failure mode: fix the page, and the answer changes.
