Theme

Presets, fonts, code themes, and the fields you set yourself.

A project that changes nothing gets a look Staleless designed: readable typography, a working sidebar, dark mode, strong contrast, and semantic HTML.

Everything below is optional.

Four, and each is a starting point rather than a lock:

PresetForCharacter
StandardMost productsSidebar, comfortable measure, soft corners.
MinimalSmall, literate docsLess furniture, more text.
DeveloperAPI and tooling docsDenser, code forward.
Help centreSupport contentCards and categories first.

Three pairings, each with a sans and a mono face:

PairingCharacter
GeistThe default. Neutral and modern.
HumanistWarmer, for prose-heavy documentation.
SystemThe reader’s own system fonts. Nothing to download.

Five: default, plain, classic, vivid, contrast.

contrast exists for accessibility. Choose it when your readers include people who need more separation than a designer would pick.

accentcolour

Your brand colour. It drives links, buttons and active states. Leave it unset to use the Staleless accent.

logoasset

Shown in the header. Upload it in the asset library.

faviconasset

The browser-tab icon. This is the one themable field with no default: unset means your site ships no icon rather than the Staleless mark. Our identity does not belong on your documentation’s tab.

social imageasset

The card image when somebody links to your site. Unset means no card.

code themestring

One of the five above.

An accent colour that fails contrast against the background in either light or dark mode is reported when you set it. Inline formatting cannot produce an inaccessible combination.

A scoped stylesheet of your own, on Pro and above. It is scoped rather than global so a rule cannot break the sidebar, the search dialog or the accessibility of a control.

Arbitrary JavaScript is not accepted.

Both, always, plus a system setting that follows the reader. There is no dark-mode flash: the theme is resolved before the first paint.

Note

“Powered by Staleless” appears in the footer on Free. Pro and above remove it. See Plans.
